Description
Activated Garden Charcoal is a stable, carbon-rich form of biochar produced by heating organic biomass (wood, agricultural waste) in low-oxygen environments (pyrolysis) that has been further refined through additional processing. After production, it is rinsed/steam cleaned, dried, and crushed to a finer particle size, enhancing its structure and performance in soil systems.
Key Aspects of Biochar:
- Soil Amendment Benefits: Like biochar, it acts as a “soil battery,” holding onto nutrients and releasing them to plants over time. Its cleaned and expanded pore structure increases its ability to retain nutrients, support microbial life, and improve soil aeration and moisture retention.
- Refined Processing: Rinsed to remove excess ash and residues, Activated Garden Charcoal provides a cleaner, more available surface for nutrients and microbes to attach to—making it more immediately effective in soil.
- Finer Particle Size: Crushed to a smaller grade, it spreads more evenly through soil and is especially suited to garden beds, pots, and grow bags, where consistency and contact with the root zone is key.
- Carbon Sequestration: By locking carbon into a stable form, it helps reduce CO₂ release while contributing to long-term soil health—just like biochar.
How to Use (Charging)
Activated Garden Charcoal is still considered “empty” and should be charged (inoculated) before use.
Mix with compost, manure, or natural fertilisers and water to allow it to absorb nutrients and microorganisms for a few days to a week before applying to soil.
Applications
Primarily used in agriculture and gardening but also used in construction materials and environmental remediation.
