Biochar

Price range: $30.00 through $1,000.00

Biochar acts as a permanent soil amendment, improving nutrient retention, water holding capacity, and microbial health for hundreds of years. It is a powerful tool for carbon sequestration.

Description

Biochar is a stable, carbon-rich form of charcoal produced by heating organic biomass (wood, agricultural waste) in low-oxygen environments (pyrolysis).

Key Aspects of Biochar:

  • Soil Amendment Benefits: Known as a “soil battery,” with its huge surface area it holds onto nutrients—preventing leaching—and releases them to plants over time. Its porous structure improves soil structure by increasing aeration and moisture retention while providing microbes a habitat to thrive in.
  • Production: Created through pyrolysis, often using agricultural residues or wood waste, reducing landfill waste
  • Carbon Sequestration: By locking carbon into a stable form, it prevents biomass from decaying and releasing CO2, acting as a climate-smart strategy.

How to Use (Charging)

Raw Biochar is “empty.” It should be “charged” (inoculated) with nutrients and microorganisms before application by mixing with compost, manure, or natural fertilizers and water to absorb nutrients for 1 to 2 weeks. Raw Biochar requires a longer charging period compared to Activated Garden Charcoal due to its unrefined structure. Whereas AGC is ready to use much sooner.

Applications

Primarily used in agriculture and gardening, but also used in construction materials, environmental remediation, and animal feed.
